LIFE AS AN ARTIST

Where did it all start? – It all kicked off in college, 2006, one project as part of my A-Levels was Portraiture, the brief was to produce a self portrait in oils. I enjoyed it so much it developed into a hobby and as they say the rest is history. I get so much joy in drawing them, it’s a very therapeutic process for me. I’m such a perfectionist and my own worse critic. I’ve done so many portraits over the years but here on my little site are just a sample of pieces from over the years.

Art has always been in my blood. I also have a degree in Graphic Design I’m a very keen photographer, studying through the lens since 2006. I studied and worked in darkroom photography alongside my courses and there’s a real sense of achievement in developing, printing and shooting on film cameras. My constant companion is my SLR camera.

Exposure – In 2007, one of my pencil portraits was shown on the BBC2 show, Strictly Come Dancing – It Takes Two. The show had a feature called ‘Strictly Cribs’ where one of the shows professional dancers, showed the viewers around their home. During the feature, he presented my drawing to the camera alongside a brief review about it. Before this appearance (so to speak) I had met and given him the portrait in person. I’m immensely proud of that moment and it’s one of my proudest achievements, seeing my work was on TV.

In 2011, I volunteered at my local gallery, where I engaged with many talented artists. The owners of the gallery saw the portraits I did in my spare time and asked if I would put them on show in the gallery. I’ve drawn many over the years but this was a great boost, to have your work appreciated.

Since then I have moved into a new area of portraiture by drawing pets. I started the pet portraits in 2014. It was my mum who suggested drawing pets/animals alongside people and they have become my most popular request.

I’ve always believed do what you love, even if it is a hobby. I hope you like what you see on this site. Enjoy!

    • Hello! I didn’t realise you had your own blogs on here. Thank you very much, I love portraiture. I’m hopefully going to set up as freelance and eventually have orders come through this website. I was just looking through your work (and of course guineapig wheekly) love your illustrations, stunning pieces 🙂 Laura x
